Ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger made a bold claim: Tottenham will be one of the top contenders for the Premier League title this season:
Arsène Wenger believes that Tottenham are one of the four clubs in contention for the Premier League title. This is a bold statement from the former Arsenal manager, given that Tottenham have not won the title since 1961. However, Wenger is clearly impressed with the progress that the club has made under Ange Postecoglou.
Postecoglou’s arrival at Tottenham has coincided with a resurgence in the club’s fortunes. “They bought Van de Ven who I find exceptional. I find him absolutely exceptional.
“They had weaknesses there [at the back] and last year [Hugo] Lloris didn’t have the best of seasons as well. And overall, the movement from Son into the middle looks very good.”
“They have a great manager, who is very ambitious and who wants to win. He is a very good tactician as well, and he knows how to get the best out of his players.”
Wenger also believes that Tottenham have the quality to compete with the best teams in the Premier League. He pointed to their recent performances against Arsenal and Liverpool as evidence of their progress.
“They have already shown that they can compete with the best teams in the league,” Wenger said.
“They drew with Arsenal and Liverpool, and they could have even won both games. They are a very dangerous team, and they will be a force to be reckoned with this season.”
In addition to Maddison and van de Ven, Wenger also highlighted the following players who he believes are key to Tottenham’s title challenge:
- Son Heung-min: Son is one of the best wingers in the Premier League. He is a prolific goalscorer and he is also a very creative player. Wenger believes that Son’s movement into the middle of the attack has been very good for Tottenham this season.
- Hugo Lloris: Lloris is a world-class goalkeeper. He had a difficult season last year, but Wenger believes that he is back to his best this season. Wenger also believes that Lloris’s leadership is important for Tottenham.
- Cristian Romero: Romero is a young Argentine defender who has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League this season. He is strong, fast, and good at reading the game. Wenger believes that Romero is a future star and that he is a key player for Tottenham.
