Poland Fires Head Coach Fernando Santos After Poor Euro 2024 Qualifying Start:
The Polish Football Federation (PZPN) announced on Wednesday that it has fired head coach Fernando Santos. The decision comes after the team’s recent struggles in Euro 2024 qualifying, in which they have won just two of their five matches and sit fourth in Group E.
Santos was appointed Poland coach in January, replacing Czeslaw Michniewicz, who had led the team to the World Cup in Qatar. However, the Portuguese coach has been unable to replicate the success he enjoyed with Portugal, whom he led to the European Championship title in 2016 and the Nations League title in 2019.
In his eight months in charge, Santos has overseen three defeats, including a 2-0 loss to Albania on Sunday. The 68-year-old also had a public falling out with star striker Robert Lewandowski, who has been critical of the team’s tactics.
The PZPN said in a statement that it had “taken the decision to dismiss the national team coach” after “careful consideration”. The federation thanked Santos for his “work and commitment” and wished him “success in the future”.
Poland’s next match is against the Faroe Islands on October 12. They are currently fourth in Group E, but are still in contention to qualify for the Euros via the playoffs.
