Harry Maguire’s mother defends him from online abuse And slammed them:
Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire’s mother Zoe, has come out in support of her son after he was subjected to online abuse. For Scoring Own Goal in England’s International Friendly Match against Scotland. England Won 3-1 but Maguire was immensely criticized by fans for his own Goal for Scotland.
Zoe Maguire took to Instagram to express her anger at the “disgraceful” and “unacceptable” comments that her son has been receiving.
She said that she understands that there are ups and downs in football, but that the abuse that Harry has been receiving has gone “far beyond football”.
“I was there in the stand as usual, it’s not acceptable what’s been created, over nothing,” she wrote. “I understand that in the football world there are ups and downs, positives and negatives but what Harry receives has gone far beyond ‘football’.
“For me seeing him go through what he’s going through is not ok. I would hate to have to see any other parents or players go through this in the future, especially the young boys and girls breaking through the ranks today. Harry has a massive heart and it’s a good job he’s mentally strong and can handle it as others might not be able too. I wish this sort of abuse on nobody!”
Harry Maguire has had a difficult time at Manchester United this season. He was stripped of the captaincy by new manager Erik ten Hag and has been struggling to get into the starting XI.
He was badly booed by some England fans during the recent international break, for scoring an own goal in the 3-1 win over Scotland.
Gareth Southgate, the England manager, has defended Maguire and said that he is a “top player”.
“From a Scotland fan’s point of view, I get it and I have absolutely no complaints, but it is a consequence of ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time, frankly,” Southgate said.
“I think our fans recognised that ‘OK there might be a bit of heat from our supporters, but we’re not going to have others getting into him’. But it is a joke. I have never known a player to be treated the way he is – not from the Scottish fans but by our own commentators, pundits, whatever it is.
“They have created something that is beyond anything I have ever seen. He has been an absolute stalwart for us in the second most successful England team in decades and he’s been a key part of that.”
Zoe Maguire’s statement has been widely shared on social media and has been met with support from many people.
She has been praised for speaking out against the abuse that her son has been receiving.
