Manchester City made a significant signing on 27th June 2023 by acquiring Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea in a deal worth $31.87 million plus five million in add-ons. The 29-year-old player has joined the club on a four-year contract.
During his time at Chelsea, Kovacic made 221 appearances across five seasons and achieved great success, winning prestigious titles such as the Champions League, Europa League, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup. In 2019/20, he was also honored with the club’s Player of the Year award.
For his national team, Kovacic has represented Croatia 95 times and played a pivotal role in their journey to the 2018 World Cup final and a third-place finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
After spending five years at Chelsea, the talented midfielder decided it was time for a change and moved to Manchester City during the summer transfer window. His arrival at City came as a replacement for Ilkay Gundogan, who left for Barcelona after achieving a treble victory.
Mateo Kovačić Debuts:
Mateo Kovacic made his first Manchester City appearance in pre-season friendly with Yokohama F. Marinos, where they won by 5-3.
Even though Kovacic has been at the club for a short period, he has already made two appearances for the team during the pre-season tour.
He expressed his excitement about joining City and the opportunity to work under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola. Kovacic believes Guardiola is a top-level coach and considers Manchester City the finest team in world football.
The Croatian midfielder’s services were secured by City for 30 million euros, making him a valuable addition to the squad as they prepare for the upcoming season.
