Real Madrid Target Ballon d’Or Runner-Up Erling Haaland for 2024 after surpassing Mbappe in Ballon d’Or ranking:
Real Madrid are targeting Erling Haaland, the Ballon d’Or runner-up in 2023, for a summer 2024 move, according to reports in Spain.
Real Madrid have previously considered Haaland due to their need for a new striker after Karim Benzema’s summer transfer. Seeing Haaland on the Ballon d’Or podium, above target Kylian Mbappe, reinforced their desire to sign him.
Real Madrid had only two players in the Ballon d’Or top 10 – Vinicius Junior and Luka Modric. According to AS, this motivates them to have more players dominating future Ballon d’Or rankings. They see Jude Bellingham, who came 18th, as a future contender.
Manchester City will not let Haaland go easily. They want to remove his release clause and extend his current contract beyond 2027. Any fee for Haaland would be huge, while Mbappe could be a free agent.
Despite the cost, Real Madrid are encouraged to pursue Haaland due to his commercial value and media attention. They want a Ballon d’Or contender in their squad next year, indicating a potential Haaland move.
By next summer, if he moved to Madrid he will only be completed two seasons at Manchester City, but city don’t want to lose him. But as long as he’s in top form, interest from Real Madrid and others will likely persist.
This season, Haaland has scored 13 goals in 15 games for City. His overall record is 65 goals in 68 games. He won the 2022 Gerd Muller Trophy for having the highest-scoring season across club and country.
Interestingly, midfielder Kalvin Phillips is also being linked with a surprise Real Madrid move despite barely playing for Manchester City since joining last summer.
